If you’ve ever smelled a Sasquatch, you know it reeks. But what really reeks for C.J. Phillips is that he’s 15 and his mother has more of a life than he does and her life isn’t circling around C.J. anymore. She even missed his parent-teacher conference. He’d be fine with that, but no one in all of Echo Falls —including his mother— seems to appreciate what he does, let alone who he is. Until he takes off for a wilderness camping trip and runs smack dab into Stinky, a teenage Bigfoot, whose own family is suffering, because of some mysterious barrels being buried in the watershed by environmental pirates. Together C.J. and Stinky develop a bond and eventual friendship that helps bring down an illegal dumping operation that threatens everyone – human and Sasquatch alike.

“But you have to realize that you don’t live in a vacuum. Everything you do will affect someone, or sometimes some thing.” (Kindle Locations 2840-2841).

CJ’s mother has been spending so much time at her café, that CJ feels ignored. She can’t find the time for their annual camping trip, but she can always find something for him to do at the café. Underappreciated, CJ decides to go camping by himself. His mother has, after all, taught him how to be independent, like herself. The wilderness isn’t just a fun camping experience when CJ has to use some of his survival skills to get by and he isn’t the only one out there. After stumbling upon a real live Bigfoot and some sketchy looking out of towners. It’ll be up to CJ to figure out what’s going on.

I didn’t get into this book until halfway through and the real action had started. The mystery of Bigfoot was enough to keep me going, but it wasn’t until CJ left his house and went camping in the woods that the real intrigue of this story pulled me in.

I was super excited to read about Sasquatch and what an encounter with a Bigfoot might practically entail. This book delivered quite a bit of the hairy ape-like man and I’m ready to read on in this series and find out more about Bigfoot and how that will affect CJ’s life in the future.

I liked how realistic CJ was as a teenager and as a kid brought up by a good parent. He was polite and thoughtful, but also selfish and blunt. His survival more than 10 miles into the wilderness was fun to read about. I would have given up long before CJ. He isn’t afraid to be independent and that is so cool!

The cliffhanger at the end was well done and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Wilderness Rim Echo Falls Volume 1 Casondra Brewster 9781540723345 Books Reviews

I loved this book! It's not often that I read young adult novels, but I really enjoyed this one. If you're looking for a good way to escape reality for a bit, and enter the world of a teenage boy, with teenage boy problems, this is it. I liked that the story was told in the first person, because it gives the reader a view through the protagonist's eyes, and I could relate to him, even though I've never been a teenage boy. In that respect, it reminded me of a novel I loved when I was a teenager (probably the same one everyone loves), "Catcher in the Rye."

The characters were well-developed, and the author gave you a good view of the other character's lives, even though the novel was in first person. Each of the characters had their own voice, and the movement of the novel through the period of time covered by the story flowed in a way that was seamless. In other words, I could clearly discern where I was in the story line, and the protagonist's memories were clearly delineated from the protagonist's current reality.

I enjoyed the story thoroughly, and I read it in a matter of days, and it was a pleasant reading experience. Sometimes I read a book, and it takes work. This one didn't. The ending left me hungry for more, and I can't wait for the next book in the series! However, I have read this author's other stories, and her endings invariably leave me wanting more. I think that's a good thing.

In short Buy it, read it, you won't regret it.
A fun read for the summer. Looking forward to the further adventures of C.J. and Vedder.
I hope there is a sequel on the way ! Well done !
An excellent novel! I burned through it in a few days, and I look forward to the next chapter in the Echo Falls saga!
Great easy read story. The author does a great job of telling the story through the eyes of a 15-year-old. Enough mystery to keep you on your toes and still stay involved in the story. I finished the book wanting wanting to know more and to continue. Can't wait to the next one to come out. I highly recommend this book for some some fun reading and insight to nature and what could be there.
I enjoyed this YA novel about a stubborn, independent teenager, who takes off into the wilderness to find himself, and finds so much more. I could relate to CJ, feeling unappreciated, and needing to get some distance from his mom. His solo journey out into the wilderness is where the story takes several twists. The author did a fantastic job painting the scene of the Pacific Northwest and the hairy creature, Stinky. I'm hooked on this series, especially after the mysterious cliff-hanger at the end!
A lively and fun romp in the woods punctuated by a very stinky menace indeed, and I'm not talking about the odiferous Sasquatch. The environmental contaminants came to life as a real threat when I realized they were making the Sasquatch family sick. I was drawn into the life and teen angst of CJ and the laid back energy of his mountain town and his friends. I liked the push and pull between CJ and his mom. I'm interested to read the rest of the series. Took off a star for more than usual errors in the edition, because there were enough to distract me sometimes. Not enough to keep me from reading...definitely recommend this story. And I love the cover artwork!
