One of my more productive vices is Genealogy. I was researching my Great Grandfather's military service in the First World War and realized that his older brother was also in the military during that conflict. The unit he was in-the 88th Infantry Division. Naturally, I researched the unit and discovered this book. The book is an excellent contemporary source on the raising of the American Army for the First World War.The 88th Infantry Division was only placed in a quiet sector for the war and then moved as a strategic reserve for an attack in the last days prior to the armistice. Due to the cease fire the attack didn't come, but the plan was in place and its description is an excellent historical record for any interested in what could have happened.
The book describes the efforts of the officers to keep the men busy following the armistice. The men get training in basic schooling, mechanical trades, and such. Additionally, there are sporting events and tournaments whose results are carefully recorded herein.
There is always some interesting statements in a book such as this that is likely un-remarkable at the time but makes one think in this time. For example, there is a statement of a dust storm at Camp Dodge. I found this quite interesting. This reviewer lived in the Mid-West for many years and never saw a dust storm there. One wonders if the dust storm in the summer of 1917 was a precursor to the ecological disaster of the "Dust Bowl" in the 1930s. Indeed the Great Plains were plowed up between 1900 and 1917 and the price of wheat at the time was high enough that nearly every available acre of land was in production. The Americans had also not learned how to manage the prairies of the Great Plains yet. There were few wind breaks, land was plowed and left fallow, and there wasn't a no-till farming method.
The pictures in the book are excellent. The uniforms of the men look good, the haircuts are very short, and there is a sense of cold, rain, and mud in all of the photos. The black and white images indeed show a dark time for Western Civilization although the aesthetic of the time is quite pretty. The monuments of the Great War can easily rank among the great monuments that the Greeks and Romans put up.
All in all this is an excellent original source of a unit's story in the Great War.

One of my more productive vices is Genealogy.
